Large Family Photoshoots | What to Expect
Large Family photoshoots are very popular during the holidays with family visiting from all over the world. With some of the best locations in the world on our doorstep it is the perfect time to capture special bonds and update your family portraits.
My style when it comes to extended family photoshoots is very relaxed. We will start with the families who have the youngest children, working fast to ensure we get as much as possible done before the little ones lose interest.
With each photoshoot I aim for a combination of setup / poses including the large group, individual families, siblings, grandchildren and grandparents with grandchildren.
If we have enough time then we can also capture individual portraits of the children and a portrait of each parent or grandparent with each child. These are by far my favourite portraits because it is these individual portraits, showing the connection between the special ones in our lives that become very special to your children as they grow up.
There are a few challenges with a large group like this.
Firstly, the more people and especially small children in your group, the harder it becomes to get natural and comfortable expressions in the large group photo.
I will give you all a few prompts which designed to get everyone feeling comfortable and interacting naturally.
Secondly, lighting a group of this size evenly and without external lighting means we are limited to shaded spots or certain times of the day.
The following are my favourite locations for extended family photoshoots, Moffat Beach, First Bay at Coolum, Bokarina Beach, Wild Horse Mountain or the parklands in Little Mountain.

Zina has been our go to photographer for a number of sessions now. We did a newborn package for my youngest son, a family sunset beach shoot and most recently did an extended family shoot for my parents 50th wedding anniversary. This wasn’t an easy feat with so many people but Zina made it look easy! Zina is a true professional and knows how to get the best out of the younger children. She takes a nice mix of staged and candid photos. I couldn’t recommend her enough.
The best photography experience ever. Starting with maternity shoot, we went to wrong place then Zina waited for us to arrive at the right place and was so understanding. New born shoot so patient and caring waiting to get the right photograph of our newborn. All our images from maternity shoot and newborn are amazing and forever grateful for Zina for capturing these moments.
I highly recommend Zina!!
We’ve had 3 newborn photo shoots within the last 3 years and she’s been absolutely amazing with each one especially this last one capturing 2 toddlers and a newborn together which I swear is near impossible!
