Outfit guidelines for every type of Portrait Photography session

With Newborn sessions I normally recommend keeping outfits very simple and even neutral or light matching colours.  With this in mind, necklines, shoulders and well fitted tops are something to pay attention to.

I love skin on skin images aswelll, so be sure to discuss this if that is an option you would like to consider.  This is especially beautiful when including young siblings.

For the family setups it is a good idea to keep the colour palette similar or  matching.

I have everything you will need for your baby, with my style I don’t use many props but do have a selection of wraps, backdrops and headbands / bonnets which we can use for your session.

Large logos, very bold patterns or very bright colours can be distracting and take away from the final image.  We will focus on your shape during a maternity session so wear something that accentuates your bump and makes you feel beautiful and comfortable.  Don’t forget to wear comfortable underwear that doesn’t show any lines and also accentuates your shape, especially because some of the gowns you may be wearing will be fitted or sheer.  I have a range of gowns you are welcome to fit and wear for your session.

Keep it interesting and personal though, think layers, scarves, hats, jackets, collars, skirts that move when you turn, interesting textures and special items.

Most importantly make sure that everyone is comfortable in what they are wearing.  There is no need to wear matching outfits, but do pay attention to wearing matching colours or pick a colour palette and try to find outfits from the same palette.  Large logos, very bold patterns or very bright colours can be distracting and take away from the final image.  Matching is subjective though, so ideally you want to pick colours and outfits that you love, so that your images reflect who you are as a family.

Keep it interesting though, think layers, scarves, hats, jackets, collars, skirts that move when you turn, interesting textures and special items.
